The Gila Wilderness was the first designated wilderness area in 1924. It is an area of land that covers 558,014 acres of land, which extends into the Gila National Forest. In this area, you will not find a motorized or mechanical vehicle of any kind. Not even bicycles are allowed in the area. There are also no buildings or mines located in this area. You are allowed to camp in the wilderness and live off the land provided that you have the proper permits to do so. This all combines to create a unique and enjoyable experience for nature lovers. The untouched area is home to all types of wildlife and depending on the area you are in; you never know what sights you will see.
